I am choosing how I act, and that is where my good lives.

The Stoics had a bracing idea: the only thing that is truly good is a good character, and the only thing truly bad is a poor one. Everything else, money, health, praise, is neither good nor bad in itself, just material you can use well or badly. That doesn't mean those things don't matter. It means your worth never rises or falls with them. On a day when outside things go wrong, you can still act with honesty, patience, and care, and nothing can take that from you. Your good is not out there waiting to be granted. It's in how you choose to be, right now.

Inspired by the old idea of virtue as the only good. Written by Ugo Charles.
