I let myself notice the good that is already here.

Seneca wrote that a wise person sees their life as already full, because they count what they have instead of aching for what they don't. Gratitude here isn't pretending nothing's wrong. It's refusing to let what's missing blot out everything that's present. The mind has a habit of fixing on the gap, the one thing not yet right, while a dozen quiet gifts sit unnoticed. Naming them out loud changes the weather inside you a little. You're not lying or settling. You're just giving the good its fair share of your attention for once. Today, before bed, name three things from the day that went all right, even small ones, and let them count.

Inspired by the old idea of gratitude. Written by Ugo Charles.
