Seneca was struck by how carefully people guard their money and how carelessly they spend their time, though time is the one thing we never get back. We act as if the supply is endless, then wonder where the years went. Remembering that life is short isn't meant to scare you. It's meant to wake you up to what matters now. You don't need to fill every minute or hustle harder. You need to notice that this is your one life passing, and to give a little more of it to the people and things you'd be sad to have missed.
