I am further along than I was, and still on my way.

Seneca told his friend that it was enough each day to lose a little of one's faults, and that no one becomes wise all at once. Progress is slow and uneven, and that's normal, not a sign you're failing. The Stoics didn't expect to arrive; they expected to keep walking. So measure yourself against who you were, not against some finished version that doesn't exist yet. The fact that you noticed a habit, paused before reacting, tried again after slipping, all of that is real movement. You don't have to be there to be on the way. Honest, patient progress is the only kind anyone actually makes.

Inspired by the old idea of gradual progress. Written by Ugo Charles.
