For the Stoics, the only true good was a good character, acting with courage, fairness, honesty, and self-control. Everything else, money, health, praise, is preferred but not essential to a well-lived life. This sounds severe until you feel its relief: if your peace rested on outcomes you can't control, you'd never be safe. But if it rests on how you choose to act, it's always within reach. On a hard day when nothing goes your way, you can still be kind, still be honest, still do the right small thing. That remains yours. And that, the Stoics said, is where a steady life is built.
