Marcus reminded himself that a good person doesn't waste time wondering how good they seem; they simply get on with being good. Reputation lives in other people's heads, which you can't reach or control. Character lives in what you actually do, which is entirely yours. When you find yourself shaping a choice around how it'll look, gently bring the question back: is this honest, is this kind, is this mine to be proud of? The approval may come or it may not. But the quiet self-respect of having done right doesn't depend on a single witness. That's the worth no one can take from you.
