July 4 · Reflection
On a day many people mark as freedom, it's worth remembering the kind the Stoics prized most. Epictetus had been enslaved, yet he taught that no one could touch the freedom that lives in your own judgments. People can take a great deal from you. They cannot make you bitter without your agreement. They cannot decide what you value or how you respond. That inner room is yours. It's a sobering idea and a steadying one. Whatever the day brings, you still get to choose your bearing inside it. That is a freedom no one hands out and no one can revoke.
