Marcus wrote that at dawn he should rise to do the work of a human being, the thing he was made for, instead of huddling under the blankets. The Stoic view of work is simple: do your part well and don't tangle your peace up in applause or results you can't control. You can't promise yourself the promotion or the praise. You can promise yourself honest effort, done with care. When you aim there, the day stops being a referendum on whether you're good enough. It becomes just the next piece of work, done as well as you can, which is the only part that was ever yours.
