I am learning to speak to myself the way I'd speak to a friend.

The Stoics asked us to treat all people with reason and goodwill, and that quietly includes the person you talk to all day long: yourself. We'd never say to a struggling friend the harsh things we say in our own heads. Marcus reminded himself that we're all part of the same nature, equally deserving of fair treatment. You're not exempt from that fairness. Speaking kindly to yourself isn't going soft or making excuses; it's accuracy, since the cruel inner voice usually lies and exaggerates. You're allowed to correct yourself gently. Learning this takes time, so go easy on the learning, too. Start with one harsh thought and answer it more fairly.

Inspired by the old idea of sympatheia. Written by Ugo Charles.
