I care more about who I am than about what others think I am.

Marcus noticed how much energy we burn guessing at other people's opinions of us, and how little peace it buys. Reputation lives in other people's heads, which means it was never really yours to control. Character lives in your own actions, and that part you own completely. When you chase approval, you hand strangers the steering wheel of your mood. When you tend your own conduct instead, you become harder to knock over. This doesn't mean you stop caring about people. It means you stop letting their passing judgments decide your worth. What you do quietly, when no one's clapping, is the truest measure of you.

Inspired by the old idea of character over reputation. Written by Ugo Charles.
