I notice what I already have before reaching for more.

Marcus began many days by counting the people and gifts already in his life, the teachers who shaped him, the kindnesses he'd been shown. It's easy to live in the gap between what you have and what you want, always leaning forward, never landing. Gratitude doesn't mean you stop wanting things or pretend your life is perfect. It just means you pause long enough to see what's already here, the warm cup, the working legs, the person who texted back. These things were once things you hoped for. Noticing them isn't naive. It's accurate. The reaching can wait a moment while you let yourself actually have what you already have.

Inspired by the old idea of gratitude. Written by Ugo Charles.
