I carry forward only my character, and that is enough.

When the Stoics looked ahead, they did not pin their hopes on what they might acquire, since so much of that lies outside our control. They looked instead to the one thing they could keep building no matter what came: their own character. Whatever the next stretch of life holds, gains or losses, ease or hardship, the way you meet it is yours to shape. You do not know what is coming. You do know who you intend to be when it arrives: a little more honest, a little more patient, a little kinder under pressure. That is a thing worth carrying forward, because it cannot be taken by circumstance. Set down the long list of outcomes you cannot promise yourself, and carry this instead. It is enough.

Inspired by the old idea of virtue as the only good. Written by Ugo Charles.
