I accept this turn of events, then do the next good thing.

Epictetus said don't demand that things happen as you wish; wish for them to happen as they do, and you'll go on well. It's a high bar, and you won't clear it every time. But there's deep relief in it. So much of our struggle is the inner argument with reality—the part of us insisting it shouldn't be this way. Acceptance doesn't mean approval or giving up. It means meeting the actual situation, not the one you wanted, and acting from there. Today, when something doesn't go your way, try to skip the long protest. Take in what happened, breathe, and ask simply: given this, what's the next good thing I can do?

Inspired by the old idea of amor fati. Written by Ugo Charles.
