I guard my time the way I'd guard anything I can't replace.

Seneca was amazed that people guard their money fiercely but give away their time to anyone who asks, when time is the one thing you can never earn back. We act as if our days are endless, letting them be filled by other people's wants and our own distractions. He didn't say to hoard your hours selfishly. He said to spend them on purpose, the way you'd spend a limited, precious thing, because that's exactly what they are. Saying no to what doesn't matter is saying yes to what does. Your time is your life, measured out in pieces. Noticing where it goes, and steering a little more of it toward what you actually value, is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself.

Inspired by the old idea of time as our truest possession. Written by Ugo Charles.
