I want a little less, and feel a little freer.

Epictetus taught that freedom comes not from getting everything you want but from wanting fewer things you cannot control. Every desire is a small string tying you to an outcome outside yourself, and the more strings, the more ways to be pulled and disappointed. This is not about killing all desire or pretending you need nothing. It is about noticing how many of your wants are borrowed, things you only crave because they were sold to you or because someone else has them. Set down one of those today and feel how the wanting itself was part of the weight. The person who needs less is harder to unsettle. A lighter want list is, quietly, a freer life.

Inspired by the old idea of freedom through fewer wants. Written by Ugo Charles.
