I notice what I already have before reaching for more.

Epictetus said the wise person does not grieve over what they lack but is glad for what they have. Wanting is endless; the moment you reach one thing, the eye jumps to the next. Gratitude is not pretending your life is perfect. It is the simple act of turning toward what is already here, the warm room, the working hands, the person who texts back, before you chase what is missing. Most of us walk past our blessings because they are familiar. Today, slow down at one of them. Say it plainly to yourself. You may find you were carrying more than you thought, and that some of the ache to acquire was really just a habit of not looking around.

Inspired by the old idea of gratitude. Written by Ugo Charles.
