Marcus Aurelius asked how strange it is that we love ourselves less than we love others' opinion of us. When your sense of worth lives in other people's approval, you hand them the controls. A compliment lifts you, a slight crushes you, and you're never steady. The Stoics pointed inward instead, to a worth that doesn't rise and fall with the room. This is a tender thing to build, so be patient. You won't flip a switch and stop caring what people think. But you can practice checking in with yourself first: did I act with honesty, with effort, with care? When the answer is yes, that can be enough, even if no one claps.
